Helical Pile Installation
Helical piles are steel shafts with helical bearing plates that are screwed into the ground until they reach stable soil. They provide immediate load-bearing support, which makes them a reliable option for stabilizing foundations, correcting settlement, and supporting new construction.
At Foundations First Northwest, we bring real helical pile experience to every install. Co-owner Mike Burrows gained deep hands-on knowledge of helical systems through marine construction work, and we partner with Chance Helical to deliver proven materials and long-term performance.
Compared to methods that require large-scale excavation, helical pile installation is typically faster and cleaner, and many projects can be completed in days instead of weeks.

Lehi, Daniel, and Josselynn crew were fast and efficient they fixed a bunch of small issues and made sure to go over everything and explain the process and reasoning. They even took time to double check some other cracks that i noticed in my garage! Would hire again.

It was a pleasure working with Foundations First. We needed to shore up our house from years of erosion and delayed maintenance. Foundations First installed helical piles and advised us on bolting down for earthquakes without trying to sell expensive services. Absolutely recommended.

FAQs
What types of foundation problems do you repair?
We handle everything from crawlspace cleanouts all the way up to helical pile installations and major structural repairs. That includes:
-
Cracked, crumbling, or spalling concrete
-
Settling or sinking foundations
-
Bowing, leaning, or failing walls
-
Uneven, sloped, or bouncy floors
-
Failing crawlspace posts, beams, and supports
-
Moisture-related damage in basements and crawlspaces
-
Structural reinforcement, shotcrete repairs, and seismic upgrades
If you’re noticing cracks, movement, or moisture around your foundation, we can inspect the problem and recommend the right repair plan.
Do you pour new foundations?
No. We do not pour new foundations for new construction projects.
Foundations First Northwest focuses on repairing and restoring existing foundations, not acting as a new-construction concrete contractor. As part of repairs, we may install new concrete, shotcrete, helical piles, carbon fiber, or other structural supports, but our role is to stabilize, repair, and protect what’s already there—not build a brand-new foundation from scratch.
How do I know if I need foundation repair?
Common warning signs include:
-
Cracks in your foundation, basement walls, or stem walls
-
Interior cracks in drywall, plaster, tile, or countertops
-
Doors and windows that stick, don’t latch, or look out of square
-
Floors that feel uneven, sloped, or spongy
-
Gaps between walls and ceilings or floors
-
Moisture, rot, or sagging in the crawlspace
If you see any of these, it’s worth scheduling an inspection so we can determine whether it’s normal movement or a structural issue that needs repair.
What areas do you serve?
We serve homeowners and property owners throughout Northwest Oregon and the surrounding region. If you’re not sure whether your property is in our service area, contact us with your address and we’ll confirm.
Do you work on both residential and commercial properties?
Yes. We repair and restore foundations for both residential homes and commercial buildings. Our team tailors each repair plan to the specific structure, its use, and its structural demands—whether it’s a single-family home, multi-unit property, or commercial space.
How disruptive are foundation repairs? Do we need to move out?
What to expect:
-
Construction noise during normal working hours
-
Limited access to certain exterior areas, the crawlspace, or basement while work is in progress
-
Some dust or vibration depending on the repair method
For larger projects such as major dig-outs or wall stabilizations, we’ll walk you through the plan ahead of time so you know exactly what to expect and can plan around the work.
Do you work on both residential and commercial properties?
Yes. We repair and restore foundations for both residential homes and commercial buildings. Our team tailors each repair plan to the specific structure, its use, and its structural demands—whether it’s a single-family home, multi-unit property, or commercial space.
Do you offer drainage and waterproofing solutions as part of foundation repair?
Yes. Water management is critical to keeping a foundation stable in the Pacific Northwest.
Along with structural repairs, we can provide:
-
Interior or exterior French drains
-
Sump pumps and discharge lines
-
Basecrete waterproofing on exposed or vulnerable concrete
-
Recommendations for grading and surface drainage improvements
Combining structural repair with proper drainage and waterproofing helps reduce the risk of future movement and moisture damage.
What is the difference between a skim coat and Basecrete?
A skim coat (also called a parge coat) is a thin layer of cement-based material applied to the surface of concrete or masonry. Its main purposes are:
-
Smoothing rough or uneven surfaces
-
Hiding cosmetic defects
-
Providing a cleaner, more uniform appearance
A traditional skim coat is not a true waterproofing system and does not add significant structural strength. In wet climates, skim coats can crack, flake, or require ongoing touch-ups.
Basecrete is a high-performance, polymer-modified cementitious waterproofing system. It is designed to:
-
Create a durable, fully waterproof barrier
-
Bond tightly to existing concrete
-
Handle movement and harsh conditions better than a basic skim coat
-
Protect below-grade and exposed concrete surfaces over the long term
In short:
-
Skim coat = mostly cosmetic; limited waterproofing and durability.
-
Basecrete = engineered waterproofing and protection system that helps extend the life of the concrete and the structure.
Where long-term protection and moisture control matter, we typically recommend Basecrete rather than a standard skim coat.
Will I need a permit or engineer for my foundation repair?
It depends on the scope of work and local code requirements.
-
Some projects, especially those involving major structural changes, may require an engineer’s design and/or a permit from your city or county.
-
Smaller repairs or maintenance-focused work may not require permits.
During your inspection, we’ll let you know:
-
Whether permits are required for your project
-
When an engineer’s report or stamped plan is recommended or necessary
-
How those requirements affect your timeline and budget
We deal with these details regularly and can help guide you through the process.
